Happy Birthday, Yang Mi-Kyung! 
Tuesday 25th July marks the birthday of Yang Mi-Kyung, the Korean actress who played Lady Han in Dae Jang Geum. Yang Mi-Kyung was awarded MBC's Special Performance Prize in 2003 for her exceptional portrayal of Lady Han. In the drama, Lady Han is one of the teachers of the Royal Kitchen, and a mentor to Jang Geum. Strict in her principles, yet warm-hearted; she loves Jang Geum like a daughter.
The character of Lady Han was probably the most diverse role in Dae Jang Geum; as she needed to maintain a cold exterior but at the same time show the audience she had a weaker and softer side, which she rarely showed to outsiders. Yang Mi-Kyung as Lady Han in Dae Jang Geum:

The word "hallyu" is a common sense in Asia now. Hallyu is translated as Korean wave. It is the phenomenon of Korean pop music, TV drama and movies overhelm all over Asia. Actually, Koreans are more surprised with unexpected booming of hallyu because there are much more famous Japanese singers than Korean singers and many Hong Kong movies have been imported to Korea while Korean movies have been hardly exproted about 10 years ago. Anyway, Koreans are very happy with that Koean culture is loved by many Asian people.
The word "hallyu" was made by Chinese not by Korean. It is combination of 2 Chinese characters Han and Lyu. Han means Korea and Lyu means flow. The combination of Han and Lyu becomes hanlyu and changed to hallyu for easier pronounce.
Among the numerous hallyu products, if I recommend just one for Europeans, it is definately Dae Jang Geum. Because it would be most easily accepted to Europeans compared to othe TV dramas, movies or pop music.
